In response to Bacon’s work and continuing my thought process from identity and skewed narratives, I began to think about the concept of censorship and oppressed art. Many of the 20th century oppressive regimes, in particular that of the facist dictator Francisco Franco in Spain, and in the 20th century communist regimes of the USSR, resulted in many artists, as well as literature, plays and books, suffering censorship and bans on their production and distribution. In a similar way, this obscured and distorted the personal narratives of individuals, causing them to oppress their emotions and ideas. Therefore, I intend to explore the theme of identity within oppressed societies and censorship, and produce examples of work which combine these aspects, which I will experiment with in the coming weeks.
