STUDY PLAN

  • For this year’s work I want to continue documenting my love for the outdoors and spending time being wild. After a summer of living in my van being outdoor most of the time, I feel settled at the idea of living barefoot and close to nature. I want to see the transformation of summer into winter while spending time living outside. I am interested in documenting the right to roam policy in Scotland by showcasing a lot of wild roaming around the highlands and islands.

  • While I photograph outdoor sports and adventures such a surfing and climbing, I want to make sure I am showcasing the incredible females who do these things in, where the media is concerned, a mainly male dominated field.

  • I want my work to be an inspiration to live simply and get back to our roots. I want to look at creating a film, with images alongside, inspired by films such as ‘Unnur’, ‘Under The Arctic Sky’ and ‘Given’ along others which showcase a different sort of life, one that is close to the earth and away from the standard society of urban life. I really love the cinematography and feel of these films, making them not only a beautiful piece of art to watch but gives inspiration. I want my work to be a personal diary that also serves as the reason someone takes a trip this weekend.

  • I want my work to conclude with a big trip I take up north this winter where I ski and surf during the same trip, most likely next January/February. This film I hope is a beautifully calm and exciting video that documents what it feels like to explore the real Scottish wilderness. Alongside action shots I want to document everything that encompasses taking a trip like this. Some of my favourite shots of James Bowdon or Matthew Tufts are them fishing, camping, living in the wild.

  • As I have experienced in the past, I want to research mainly by experiencing the outdoor space and really focussing on what it means to me to be allowed to roam freely and wildly and live presently. I want to try and use words as much as possible by writing diary entries and other people written word or poetry to work alongside the visual.
  • Alongside these adventures will be my research on the right to roam policy in Scotland that I am focussing on for my visual culture essay. I want to research what makes people change their opinion on things, and on conservation photography and whether as creatives we can make a difference with the images we take and create positive protest and implement change. I have always been interested in the concept of conservation photography, with examples of Christina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen who are wildlife conservation photographers who use their images to promote conservation and bring attention to the beauty we need to protect. I want to research the effectiveness of this and whether I can use my videography and photography to encourage more trespass and better laws surrounding the land.
  • This semester I also really want to experiment using underwater housing and investigate using a drone.

Phase one – (Oct-Dec)

Go on multiple weekend adventure, shoot small videos and lots of footage alongside images. Try 35mm and medium format and develop myself to experiment, perhaps even super 8mm. Investigate using underwater housing and underwater photography (borrow from Oscar?), maybe drones. Write multiple diary entries while exploring, research land use and right to roam as well as stories of people who live close to the earth. Plan exact big trip and places to visit within Scotland. Research people who live off the land and use within own personal journey. Consolidate the style and how I will put together footage and images, decide on video or stills and what it is going to look like.

Phase two – (Jan-Mar)

Film and photograph while away in the Christmas hols, go on my big trip where I surf/ski, develop all film/edit all footage. Get skiing and snow footage, (hopefully surf in the snow). Continue to edit all images and video.

Phase three – (Mar-Jun)

Finish editing, collating all images and footage. Plan exhibition, and final submission.
