Botanical Zoo

My project started by focusing on the expression ‘If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?’. Posing the question whether something exist if it is not perceived by our consciousness? This motif of a falling tree and unperceived existence is directly comparable to bring awareness to the public surrounding deforestation. In 2017, one football pitch of forest was lost every second. How is this conceivable, does it need to be witnessed to be recognised? To look into deforestation, I wanted to look into controlled environments; that emulate different atmospheres, specifically the atmospheres that are being deforested. Botanical gardens are representations of different endangered climates; they could be considered as zoos for plants. The series on this first slide focus of the Sumatran Tiger at Edinburgh Zoo and the Tropical Palm House in the Edinburgh Botanical Garden; by presenting both these subjects through the glass pain; the relationship between the two highlights the artificial enclosed environments.
