As the start of the academic year is underway, the RSO and Knowledge Exchange teams have come together to offer a one-stop shop showcasing all their events across the academic year. Al Innes, Research Development Officer for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences within the Research Support Office, takes us through what you can expect to find in the coming months on the new RSO event page.
For me the start of the academic year is hugely exciting (and yes, frustratingly busy!) time of year. The RSO has been working hard across the summer to develop a great set of events to help support colleagues across the University develop their skills and produce excellent research proposals. The coming months will see a selection of excellent and informative events, covering ideas to impact; and engineering to English literature. The RSO Event Page includes all upcoming events from across the Research Support Office that are designed to support those academics and support staff working in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Across the year the RSO and the Knowledge Exchange teams provide events including learning lunches, workshops, funder visits, briefings and roundtables; all designed to enhance opportunities to develop impactful research and knowledge exchange.
As part of my role in the Research Support Office, I am working with Genevieve Warwick on a campaign that launched recently, to enhance the institutions engagement with AHRC and the changing funding landscape. The AHRC Developing Research Excellence Campaign will host a KE and Impact session intended for arts and humanities researchers planning a research project with pathways to impact. I would encourage those who wish to attend to come prepared to talk briefly about what their research is about and how it may have benefits beyond academia. Of course, I am happy to discuss this with anyone prior to the event, should they wish to get in touch with me.
One of the most exciting events on the horizon includes a Learning Lunch with the KE team focused on those interested in working with primary and secondary schools or who would like to. At this event, Diana Paton (HCA) will share her experience of working with schools during their research projects and Melanie Smith, Widening Participation Officer, will share her knowledge of what works best when engaging with schools.
The final highlight on the events calendar for me is the GCRF Success Stories and Next Steps event being held by the College of Science and Engineering on the 24th October. This event is a great opportunity to find out what is currently happening with GCRF and a fantastic chance to gain an insight in to real GCRF projects, discuss with researchers the rewards and issues they faced running GCRF projects, and get advice on how you can make the most of the opportunities GCRF brings.
These are just some of the events that stand out for me in the coming weeks, but there is a whole host of great events on the RSO calendar for the rest of 2017 and beyond.
