How to diversify your funding sources – ERO event 30 July 2024

In this blog post Al Innes, Strategic Research Executive in Edinburgh Research Office, highlights an upcoming event aimed at researchers looking to expand and diversify their funding portfolio.

This upcoming workshop on 30 July is designed for researchers at the University of Edinburgh who are interested in diversifying their sources of funding. Whether you’re looking to refine previously unsuccessful applications or seeking to develop new skills to better position your research for various funding opportunities, this workshop offers valuable insights and practical advice.

The event will give insights into how you can broaden your funder portfolio. This will include learning strategies to identify and approach a wider range of funding bodies, helping you reduce dependency on a single source and increase the likelihood of securing funds. In addition, these skills can be utilised when reworking unsuccessful applications. We hope the session will provide practical tips on how to revisit and revise applications that didn’t succeed previously, turning potential rejections into successful funding opportunities.

As well as this, we will hear from experienced academic researchers about their own funding activity and about skills for developing a versatile funding approach. We’ll explore how you can enhance your own ability to tailor research proposals to suit different funding bodies and how to ensure your projects are presented in the most compelling way to diverse funders.

This workshop equips researchers with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complex landscape of research funding more effectively. The workshop aspires to yield the following outcomes for participants:

  • Enhanced comprehension of varied funding landscapes.
  • Proficiency in the strategic application of the “Minimum Viable Project” concept.
  • Proficient utilisation of the Research Project Canvas for adaptable research planning.
  • Discernment of the distinct characteristics sought by different funders.
  • Diversifying your portfolio.
  • De-risking and broadening your options.

The event will run twice on 30 July 2024, in two locations across the University of Edinburgh campus.
