Big Ideas Accelerator Fund Now Open for Applications

Are you looking for a pathway to make your research ideas into reality?

Are you unable to fund the right external funding to explore your next big research idea?

The Big Ideas Accelerator Fund is here to support and catalyse radical, interdisciplinary collaborations within the University community, that wouldn’t be funded by other means. Once again opening its doors on 14 February 2024, this internal seed-funding scheme aims to fuel innovative and disruptive projects that transcend traditional boundaries.

Key Information

  • Grant Range: £10,000 – £15,000 (Up to £20,000 with clear justification)
  • Number of Projects: Anticipating 15-20 projects
  • Deadline: 24 April 2024

What We’re Looking For

We’re on the lookout for ideas that push the envelope, requiring proof of concept or pilot development, and falling outside the scope of external funding or existing internal schemes. The emphasis is on fostering collaborations that span multiple Colleges, working across disciplines, and demonstrating strategic importance to the University.

Judging Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on three key criteria:

  1. Originality, Significance, and Quality: How ground-breaking is your proposed work?
  2. Potential for External Funding: Can your project pave the way for significant external partnerships and funding?
  3. Feasibility of Delivery: Is your plan realistic and achievable within the given timeframe?

We will run an information webinar on 12 March 2024 for prospective applicants to the fund – for more info and to sign-up follow the link below.

Focus Areas

The Big Ideas Accelerator Fund encourages proposals across all research domains. However, we are particularly interested in projects aligning with the university’s three major interdisciplinary missions:

  • Data, Digital & AI
  • Future Health & Care
  • Climate & Sustainability

Application Details

Projects must commence from 1 August 2024, and requested funds must be utilised within the financial year 2024/25. The seed funding is explicitly designed to support the development of major funding bids and strategic partnerships with a clear pathway to external funding.

Don’t miss this opportunity to shape the future. Submit your ground-breaking ideas and be the catalyst for change.
