Understanding Wellcome: Mental Health theme community event

In this post Al Innes and Jonathan Rans of the Strategic Research Development Team highlight our upcoming community event for academics with research interests that align with Wellcome’s Mental Health thematic area.

About the event

Wellcome funding aims to bring together expertise across science, innovation and society to develop solutions to urgent health challenges facing humanity.

Our information event on 10 May, 13:30 – 15:00 will bring together academics at the University working in these areas, and we encourage participation from academics based in all three of the University’s colleges. This event will be an opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the University working on similar challenge areas and to explore synergies between your work.

We will also hear from Professor Danny Smith, Edinburgh’s academic liaison with Wellcome on Mental Health, who will provide insights on the theme. We will discuss the theme’s potential opportunities and collectively explore ways in which the Edinburgh research community might develop their response.

What do I need to know about Wellcome before attending the event?

This Edinburgh Research Office community event is for University of Edinburgh academic staff with a knowledge of Wellcome and research interests that align with Wellcome’s Mental Health thematic area.

Broadly, this focuses on depression, anxiety, and psychosis – looking at how they develop and how they can be resolved. Researchers new to the funder should read our introductory materials on the Edinburgh Research Office Wellcome Research Hub.

What should I expect from the event?

We will survey participants beforehand to ensure that the design of the event is led by the needs of the participants. This will allow facilitated activities through which attendees will work with relevant colleagues to identify how their research can benefit from and contribute to the work of others.

The aim of the event is to:

  • strengthen your connections with other researchers working within the Wellcome’s thematic remit
  • strengthen your understanding of how your research synergises with colleagues’
  • start the process of developing interdisciplinary projects that could stand to secure major funding under the theme

There will be an opportunity after the end of the event for continued discussion between participants where that would be useful.
