Understanding Wellcome: crafting a successful application | Thursday 15 December, 14:00 – 15:30

In this post Al Innes and Jonathan Rans, colleagues in the Strategic Research Development Team, highlight an upcoming event aimed at members of our research community interested in applying for funding from Wellcome.

Whether you are completely new to Wellcome, or have experience of applying to this funder in the past, recent changes in the way in which they approach their funding may mean that they feel unfamiliar to you.  We are hosting an online information event on Thursday 15 December from 14:00-15:30 that aims to demystify Wellcome’s new approach and give you the knowledge you need to craft a compelling application.  We will look at what research they are interested in funding and give you an overview of their new funding mechanisms.

Please note: the presentation section of this event will be recorded and will be made available to UoE colleagues.

Wellcome announced in 2020 that they would be moving to a new ‘simplified set of funding schemes’ a move away from their core areas of support for biomedical science, population health, product development and applied research, humanities and social science, and public engagement and creative industries – with a focus instead on a ‘more diverse’ range of research disciplines.

This session will enable you to understand these new priority areas, and access the funding mechanisms they have designed.

Who will you hear from?

We will have an open discussion with two University of Edinburgh members of Wellcome panels:

  • Professor Sarah Reece (ECR Award Interview Panel), and
  • Professor Sara Brown (Genomics Expert Review Panel)

They will offer their insights on the funder as holders of close, strategic relationships.

You will also have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of our own successful applicants.  Professor Dónal O’Carroll (Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine) winner of a recent large discovery mode award will offer his perspective on applying for Wellcome funding.

Anna Anderson (ERO Senior Research Funding Specialist) will be our final speaker, discussing upcoming schemes and costings, and the practicalities of applying to Wellcome at Edinburgh.

Rounding off the event will be the opportunity for open discussion with all the speakers in a Q&A session.
