This 5 day workshop brought the Edinburgh Futures Institute, Design Informatics’ students, uCreate, and Jason Bruges Studio together to re-imagine interaction design at the EFI amidst or post-pandemic. It was the outcome of an awarded University of Edinburgh Student Experience Grant to tutor and PhD student Dorothea Kalogianni, supported by students of the MSc in Design Informatics (class 2020-2021) and Dr Bettina Nissen.
Students were called to design for the Futures Institute building of the University of Edinburgh either a ‘in the meantime’ intervention during or future intervention for post-pandemic situations.
We tried to envision how we move from pre-covid interactions towards meaningful, novel interdisciplinary shared environments that blend aspects of the new normal with imaginative uses of technologies as a catalyst for discussions and public engagement.
We focused on the Edinburgh Futures Institute Building* and it’s public interior spaces. Our implementations aim at embracing and promoting the ethos and vision of EFI on researching and understanding complex future scenarios and applying innovation from their data rich activities.
*The EFI building has been under renovation by the architectural firm Bennett's Associates.
