Edinburgh Historical Reconstruction Lab

Hands-on history for research, teaching, and public engagement

Projects and Partnerships

The Historical Reconstruction Lab is part of the Centre for Historical Reconstruction Research, an interdisciplinary umbrella that brings together colleagues working on any aspect of historical reconstruction – from prehistoric mud building to virtual reality.

As well as using the lab for teaching and research at the University of Edinburgh, we offer:

  • historical consultancy, particularly for matters relating to medieval, Renaissance and early modern cosmetics, hygiene, haircare, medicine and domestic cleanliness.
  • workshops for cultural and educational groups and organisations
  • a Visiting Fellows scheme for researchers and academics outside Edinbugh who wish to use our facilities
  • we are developing training in historical reconstruction techniques for teachers, academics and colleagues in cultural organisation

Please contact us (CfHRR@ed.ac.uk) to discuss partnerships and research projects with local, national and international organisations. We are currently working on the following:

  • A project with the Science Museum, London to run workshops related to their early modern pharmacy, cosmetic and hygiene collections by making associated recipes. (Jill Burke)
  • An ongoing collaboration with artists Baum & Leahy for a co-created installation, ‘The Beauty Sensorium’ – exhibited at the Wellcome Collection Cult of Beauty exhibition 2023-4, and the Centre for Contemporary Culture, Barcelona in 2026. (Jill Burke)
  • Work to understand premodern and prehistoric ceramics-making, particularly the evolution of the potters wheel (Beatrijs de Groot)
  • A project on sustainable turf building at Comrie Croft (Tanja Romankiewicz).
