Projects and Partnerships
The Historical Reconstruction Lab is part of the Centre for Historical Reconstruction Research, an interdisciplinary umbrella that brings together colleagues working on any aspect of historical reconstruction – from prehistoric mud building to virtual reality.
As well as using the lab for teaching and research at the University of Edinburgh, we offer:
- historical consultancy, particularly for matters relating to medieval, Renaissance and early modern cosmetics, hygiene, haircare, medicine and domestic cleanliness.
- workshops for cultural and educational groups and organisations
- a Visiting Fellows scheme for researchers and academics outside Edinbugh who wish to use our facilities
- we are developing training in historical reconstruction techniques for teachers, academics and colleagues in cultural organisation
Please contact us (CfHRR@ed.ac.uk) to discuss partnerships and research projects with local, national and international organisations. We are currently working on the following:
- A project with the Science Museum, London to run workshops related to their early modern pharmacy, cosmetic and hygiene collections by making associated recipes. (Jill Burke)
- An ongoing collaboration with artists Baum & Leahy for a co-created installation, ‘The Beauty Sensorium’ – exhibited at the Wellcome Collection Cult of Beauty exhibition 2023-4, and the Centre for Contemporary Culture, Barcelona in 2026. (Jill Burke)
- Work to understand premodern and prehistoric ceramics-making, particularly the evolution of the potters wheel (Beatrijs de Groot)
- A project on sustainable turf building at Comrie Croft (Tanja Romankiewicz).
