Amundsen Sea Sector, West Antarctica

See Publication list for Amundsen Sea Research.

Amundsen Sea Sector Map Much of my research for over a decade has focussed on the ice streams and ice shelves feeding the Amundsen Sea off West Antarctica. This is the part of Antarctica that has consistently been losing ice for the last 30 years, ever since we have been able to observe it with satellites. Dominated by Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers, both broadly equivalent in area to the entire United Kingdom, the ice losses over the last three decades have contributed an estimated ~10% of observed sea-level rise around the world.iSTAR Oversnow Traverse

Our current research is channelled through the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, which aims to understand why this part of Antarctica is diminishing so rapidly, and to project how rapidly further ice may be lost in the future.

Prior to this, my group and I have made key contributions in acquiring and analysing ground-based geophysical datasets across the Pine Island Glacier catchment, most recently as part of NERC’s iSTAR Programme. We are integrating analyses of these datasets with further geophysical datasets acquired from airborne and satellite platforms. The data inform us of the shape and condition of the ice’s contact with the underlying bed, and the internal structure of the ice, which form vital inputs for numerical modelling of the region’s future ice losses and projected sea-level contributions.
