Case Study: Research Skills for Nuffield Research Placements

On 31st May 2023, Emma Wilson delivered a session on research skills to 25 Scottish high school students participating in Nuffield Research Placements. Learn more about how the resources were used.

What is Nuffield Research Placements?

Nuffield Research Placements (NRP) is an annual programme running each summer which provides young people (Year 12 in England and S5 in Scotland) with the opportunity to gain hands-on independent research experience. In Scotland, NRP is co-ordinated by Scottish Schools Education Research Centre (SSERC). SSERC also coordinate the STEM Ambassadors programme in Scotland, which connects STEM professionals with schools and youth groups.

What’s Emma’s Experience with NRP?

Emma previously got involved with NRP in 2021 through her STEM Ambassador volunteering, and has hosted two students. She is hosting a student again this year and, after reaching out to SSERC and the STEM Ambassador Community to et feedback on the Open Research in the Classroom resources, she was invited to deliver a research skills session using the resources as part of the NRP student induction.

Adapting the resources

Emma adapted the Open Research in the Classroom slide deck template to meet the needs of her session. This included adding a personal “about me” page, explaining her work and how it relates to good research practice, and outlining the key points from the top tips video.

Delivering the session

Emma gave her research skills presentation during the first 15 minutes of the larger NRP student induction session. The presentation worked well as an opener for the rest of the session and gave the students insights into how they can get the most out of their NRP experience.
