Biography

I received a first class (Hons.) degree in electronic and electrical engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, an MSc and a PhD degree from Northumbria University at Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. During my PhD, I was awarded the ‘Xcel Best Engineering and Technology Student of the year 2009’.

I started my research career by studying the effect of the atmosphere on data carrying laser beam traversing the atmosphere. This was carried out under the supervision of Professor Zabih Ghassemlooy. Specifically, I studied the use of subcarrier intensity modulation and diversity techniques to combat the deleterious effects of atmospheric turbulence on data-carrying laser beams. For this, I was awarded a PhD by Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2009. In 2010, I then joined the University of Edinburgh as a postdoctoral researcher to work on visible light communication (VLC) in Professor Harald Haas’s group. Between 2012 and 2014 I was a lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University. In 2015, I joined the University of Edinburgh as a university lecturer and chancellor’s fellow in optical communications.

I co-authored the book ‘Optical wireless communications: system and channel modelling with Matlab®‘  published by CRS press in 2012. I am a senior member of the IEEE, an associate editor of the IEEE Access Journal and Guest Editor for Elsevier Journal of Optik (special issue on optical wireless communications) in 2017 and Technical Program Committee member for several conferences. I was an invited speaker at various events including the 2016 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topicals. My primary research interest in optical communications including visible light communications, free-space optical communication and fibre communication.
