Stars of Nursing Studies on Screen

Sharon Levy, Programme director for the MSc in Advanced Clinical Skills, shares his experience of being part of one of the filmed clinical scenarios.

Wide- Nurse and Patient

I must admit that I was nervous prior to the filming of a clinical scenario session, for our MSc in Advanced Clinical Skills. Aided by Ali – a well-known actor, researcher and a nurse working in the NHS, my character was that of a plumber seen by a practice nurse for the removal of sutures.

The main focus of the video is demonstrating how opportunistic health promotion could be maximised or… avoided. We had a ‘semi structured’ script and I was set to be a ‘typical’ – not very communicative – patient who has a few challenges at work and home.

It took a number of takes for me to perfect my lines but the end result looks realistic and thought provoking. All we need now is to bolt other digital segments to it and build an online content that is engaging and informative.

We hope students will gain new knowledge from reviewing these scenarios and through reflecting on the theory and the evidence presented to them. The overall aim is to support development of new skills with which to offer better person centred and competent care.

We certainly had a lot of fun, both on and off camera, and I found it surprisingly difficult to play the nurse at times!
