Nursing Studies make links in Seoul

cuthill 3

Last Summer Dr Fiona Cuthill had a very successful visit to EWHA Womans University in Seoul, South Korea, thanks to a British Council Researcher Links Travel Grant.

From 15th June – 18th July 2015 she was able to develop research collaborations between academic researchers working in the Nursing Science Department at EWHA, and has identified research issues of mutual interest that can be taken forward in the future.

Dr Cuthill was able to spend time with the entire Nursing faculty, and has now identified several joint research projects in relation to resilience, gender roles, nursing and migrant health which are now being developed further to secure research funding.

The visit strengthened the existing research links between the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh and EWHA, and also allowed links with other Universities in Seoul.  Dr Cuthill led a day focused on qualitative research and was a great opportunity to discuss contemporary issues in qualitative research and to explore cultural synergies and differences.

Spending time in Seoul has expanded Dr Cuthill’s research on ‘gender’ to focus more specifically on the changing relationship between gender and nursing in an Asian context.

In addition, the visit gave her the time and space to be able to develop some new research ‘threads’ that have global interest, particularly in relation to migrant health. Finally, the visit enabled her to meet some amazing people, experience fantastic Korean cuisine and to enjoy the delights of the beautiful city of Seoul.
