
In this 70th anniversary of Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh, alumnus Ari Sawitri shares her experiences as a valued member of our Nursing Studies community.
Could you introduce yourself and share when you studied in Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh?
My name is Ari Sawitri, and I completed my PhD in Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh between 2014 and 2019. I am now a lecturer in the Nursing Department at Udayana University in Indonesia.
What inspired you to pursue a career in nursing/further studies in nursing?
What inspired me to pursue doctoral studies was my desire to advance my academic career and to contribute to the development of nursing science through research.
Looking back, what was the most rewarding part of your experience in Nursing Studies?
Close mentorship from academic supervisors further enhanced my analytical, methodological, and scholarly competencies. This experience was instrumental in shaping my professional identity as a nurse researcher and strengthened my commitment in promoting evidence-based practice within the field of nursing.
What challenges did you face during your studies, and how did you overcome them?
The main challenge I faced was the demanding nature of conducting high-quality research, which was often exhausting. However, the University provided excellent support to meet students’ needs and I made extensive use of the facilities offered by the university.
Can you share your experience of being part of the community in Nursing Studies?
Working closely and collaborating with an international academic community strengthened my critical thinking, research skills, and scholarly confidence.
How has being part of Nursing Studies shaped your career?
The supportive academic environment and thoughtful mentorship helped me grow not only intellectually, but also personally. These experiences guided me toward a fulfilling career in academia, where I now serve as a lecturer.
What advice would you give to current and future nursing students?
My advice for current and future nursing students is to stay curious, stay compassionate, and stay committed to the values of the profession. Nursing is both intellectually demanding and emotionally meaningful, so embrace every learning opportunity. Take care of yourselves, as resilience is essential for successfully navigating a PhD program.
And finally, do you have any reflections or wishes for Nursing Studies on its 70th anniversary?
My wish for Nursing Studies is that the programme continues to grow in excellence, and it remains a place where students feel supported, challenged and deeply connected to a community that believes in their potential. May it remain a strong and inspiring community for future generations.
