As a contribution to Big Things on the Beach’s Public Art Fest, the School of Art at Edinburgh College of Art are supporting PUBLIC SCHOOL, three workshops designed to creatively engage with the festival’s key question ‘what makes art public’? The workshops are predicated on the understanding that art practice can be a powerful means to enable the public realm. Rather than assume public art to be something done to, or on behalf of, the public (monuments, memorials, public places and spaces, events, etc.), we might consider it as actions carried out by the public as part of a commons of cultural practice. To gain a more rounded understanding of what public art might become, it’s essential to be involved in its production, working closely with artists to gain an insight into how we might collectively answer the thorny question ‘what makes art public’?
The workshops are facilitated by Talia Moscovitz, Catronia Black, Kate Grenyer (eca Master of Contemporary Art Theory students), Mike McCallum (eca Master of Fine Art graduate) and Neil Mulholland, Head of the Masters in Contemporary Art at eca (masterscontemporaryart.eca.ac.uk).
The three artists we have invited to lead the workshops have made considerable contributions to public art and all engage with education as part of their artistic practice. Since the workshops are part of the invited artists’ practices, we ask that you look at the artists’ websites to gain a sense of what they do before signing up for their workshop.
The three workshops are open to 20 participants and all will last no more than four hours. No previous experience of art practice or knowledge of public art is required. You are required to play a full part in the workshop, it will not be a spectator sport! All of the workshops make use of the Portobello townscape and will require you to move around the local area to complete the projects.
The artists and their facilitators will provide you with all the information and instructions you need on arrival at the Portobello Indoor Bowls & Leisure Centre.
No preparation will be required for any of the workshops, but we ask that you provide an email and phone contact in case we need to contact you prior to the workshops.
– The workshops are free of charge.
– Participants may attend as few or as many of the workshops as they wish.
– There will be an hour’s lunch break in the middle of each workshop.
Lunch will NOT be provided.
