Friday 11th April

Dear All,

Thank you for your work this week.

Congratulations to Jen Smith, who has now been confirmed in a promoted post as University Website Team Manager to lead and manage our team looking after one of the largest collection of websites in the sector.  Jen  joined us in 2020 in the role of service manager and is now University Website Team Manager, and will be leading the EdWeb 2 service in its new era. Congratulations also to Paula Sivanandan, who had joined us to lead engagement with our community, supporting the successful migration to EdWeb 2, as she will be taking a new role with the Business Admin team. Thankfully, she will not be too far away.

Congratulations to everyone who successfully applied for voluntary severance packages. Letters will follow soon.

It was lovely to see you all at our Spring on the Wing Pot-luck Picnic on Wednesday. A very fine spread of tasty picnic items were shared. Congratulations to the quiz winners and especially to Eloise, who won free tickets to Edinburgh Zoo to visit our LTW 2025 mascot animal. This year our animal is a middle-aged bird who lives on the wing amongst friends Baer’s pochard Her name is Patricia, if you want to give her a wave. She can dive for 40 seconds though, so if you can’t see her, just wait a minute.  Thank you to Katie, Tess and Cassie for organising the picnic.

You will have seen a date going into your diaries for our 2025 LTW Mandatory Training Day ( LTW MTD) . I am sure you, like me, remember this as the funnest day of the year, when we all spend the day doing all out mandatory training. It is always the Friday of Learning at Work Week, Home   and you should reject all other meetings on that day so that you can focus on your training and help your team to top the leader board.  More details of the training which is mandatory will follow.

Our next reading group meet-up will be on Tuesday 29th April from 12.30-1.30. The session will be run hybrid both on Teams and in-person in Meeting Room 8 on Floor E. All welcome. The topic for this month will be Staying Safe Online. Join us to discuss everything from online harassment to extremism pushed by social media algorithms. We’ll discuss the impact this radicalisation can have on us as a society, especially topical with the new Netflix show Adolescence. We’ll also chat about ways of keeping ourselves and others safe online, and discuss what we do already in ISG. We have put together some really interesting articles and videos for you to look at on the resource list, and we hope there is something for everyone. As always, there is no pressure to read all the resources – they are there for interest.

If you are on campus and can spare a pint,  you can donate blood nearby on Lauriston Place. We have a number of regular donors in LTW and the centre has a variety of opening hours so you could go during your lunch break or afterwork and it usually doesn’t take more than an hour and you are rewarded with a teacake (other tasty treats are available) afterwards. For more details and to find out if you are eligible by visiting Scotblood | Giving blood.

Have a good weekend, enjoy the sunshine and keep asking questions.
