Hi, we are the Edinburgh University Medical Ethics and Humanities Society.
Who are we?
- We are a university society that explores medicine through ethics, literature and art. EUMEHS provides an open, non-judgemental space, to voice and discuss interests within medical humanities.
- We believe it is important to branch out of the medical curriculum to explore topics that affect our patients on a personal level. Through debate and discussion, we broaden our own perspective to facilitate better patient-centred care.
- Our society involves students from many different year groups, often, but not exclusively studying medicine
What do we do?
- We host talks throughout the academic year with influential speakers – for example author Dr Gavin Francis.
- Film nights e.g. The Children Act
- Host ethical debates
- Support local and global charities – e.g. Positive Help provides practical help for people who have HIV and Hepatitis C
- Help educate on crucial matters e.g. Black Lives Matter
- We work with other medical societies, such as LGBTQ+ medics, to create inter societal events
- We promote and support our members to organise events, no matter how big or small.
- Next year we hope to collaborate with the Botanical Gardens, work further with Positive Help, and create topical events.
Why should you join our society?
- We are a supportive, inclusive and open group of individuals
- We really care about our message
- Our events are usually accompanied by food
- We are a free society
- We meet a few times per term on a drop-in basis
