Surgical Society

ESSS logoFounded in 2005, Edinburgh Student Surgical Society (ESSS) is the official surgical society of The University of Edinburgh.  Exposure to surgery during medical school can be limited, therefore ESSS strives to provide students with the opportunities and tools to confidently pursue a career in surgery.

Throughout medical school we host a variety of events to facilitate your experience of surgery. These include our popular Surgical Skills Club sessions, run by Edinburgh-based foundation doctors and trainees, where you can develop practical surgical skills including cyst excision, knot tying and suturing. Furthermore, there is the opportunity to get your surgical skills formally assessed and receive certification for your surgical portfolio.

You will also get the chance to engage with numerous notable surgeons and academics through our academic tutorials, lectures, and workshops. Our one-off workshops give extra scope for developing specialty-focussed surgical skills, with access to special equipment such as laparoscopic training simulators.

Group shot of society membersOther notable opportunities to get involved include our Surgical Careers Roadshow and Women in Surgery events. ESSS also hosts a National Undergraduate Surgery and Trauma Conference, a well-established event in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh featuring lectures from guest speakers and surgical skills workshops.

There are lots of opportunities to become involved; look out for the opportunity to be our first-year representative in the new academic year! If you want to learn more, check out our website for more opportunities, advice and the infamous Chatty Student Blog. We look forward to welcoming you in September!
