Why did you decide to apply for the 2+2 Programme with the University of Edinburgh?
I applied to the 2+2 programme with the intention of broadening my academic horizons. Having studied in both China (at SCUT for the first two years of my undergraduate degree) and the US (at UC Berkeley on a study abroad programme), I wanted to experience the rich academic traditions and innovative teaching methods of the UK. The dual degree option of the 2+2 programme was particularly appealing, as it provided a competitive edge for my future career. I like to think of myself as an international citizen so this programme promised a global perspective that I was eager to explore.
What did you enjoy most about the programme? Do you have any highlights?
There were so many aspects I enjoyed, from the interactive classes to the vibrant student life. The flexibility to explore courses across various disciplines, especially in the School of Informatics, was a major highlight. I took full advantage of this by attending extra classes and engaging with instructors who were always supportive and encouraging. Outside of academics, some of my fondest memories include hiking trips, visiting the beautiful Scottish Highlands and forming lasting friendships with my fellow 2+2 students. The close-knit community made my experience truly enriching and we’re still in touch with each other today!
How did you find the transition from studying at SCUT to studying at Edinburgh?
Transitioning from SCUT to Edinburgh required some adaptation, particularly to the different teaching styles. However, the support I received from the School made the process much smoother. For instance, I was offered a special pre-sessional course to cover any gaps, particularly in statistics, which was fundamental for my studies. The academic environment at Edinburgh was incredibly stimulating, fostering both personal and intellectual growth. This experience taught me to adapt and excel in diverse educational settings.
Can you tell us about your career so far since graduating?
Since graduating in 2020, I applied for a few different PhD programmes and after receiving offers from several universities I went on to pursue a PhD in Statistics at the University of Oxford, where I was honoured to be a Clarendon Scholar. My research delves into artificial intelligence, which builds on the foundational knowledge I gained at Edinburgh. After completing my PhD, I accepted a role as an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, which allows me to continue my research and engage in international collaborations. This journey has been really rewarding, and I look forward to exploring new opportunities in academia and industry.
What did you gain from your time at the University, and were there any experiences that particularly helped prepare you for life after graduation?
My time at the University of Edinburgh was incredibly formative. Beyond the academic knowledge, the experience I gained in my part-time job as a Digital Skills Trainer in Python has been invaluable for my teaching career. I also benefitted from School scholarships and travel grants that enriched my research experience, allowing me to undertake research at UCLA one summer. The diverse and inclusive environment at Edinburgh opened my eyes to global perspectives, preparing me well for life after graduation. These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my career path.
What advice would you give future students considering the 2+2 Mathematics Programme?
For future students, I would suggest taking full advantage of the programme’s flexibility by choosing a wide range of courses and engage with your advisers—they can offer valuable guidance tailored to your interests and goals. The Careers Service is also great – they really helped me polish my application documents!
Outside of your studies, embrace the opportunity to immerse yourself in different disciplines and activities. Edinburgh offers a vibrant cultural scene, and getting involved can enrich your experience. There is so much to see and visit – the beach, the castle, the Christmas markets… the city is beautiful!
Finally, stay open-minded and proactive in seeking out new opportunities to make the most of your time here.
