Week 3 and Week 4
Weeks 3 and 4
Week 3 was a READING WEEK and after spending some time adjusting to the exhaustion of a busy second week of classes, I started reading for the post-epidemic society in Week 4. This class was about building a city after the epidemic and how to make Edinburgh more accessible.
The course also involved students going out on interviews to collect data, and our group’s topic was related to how to make public transport more accessible to women and how to ensure that women are treated equally in the city’s construction. We were asked to interview people about whether they had experienced unequal treatment of women on public transport or in public places, and whether they had experienced any insecurity. In general Edinburgh is a very safe city and women have not had any unsafe experiences. However, some women choose not to go out at night and men felt they could behave as gentlemen and intervene to protect women when they are in danger.
In our survey, in a developed country and in a more urban city, although the overall experience of gender inequality in the city is less, some women choose not to go out at night. In countries that are less economically developed and far less open-minded than developed countries, women experience inequality in public spaces in many different ways. For example, women may miss out on education or job opportunities because they are concerned about the safety of public transport, which can exacerbate gender inequalities in society to varying degrees. This can add to the already large gender gap in economically disadvantaged areas. This is my initial view of the course, and a more detailed view will need to be developed once the topic has been identified.
I have the next two weeks free, which I will use to start writing my course paper and to spend some time discussing my thesis research with my supervisor. I also need to prepare for the last two weeks of my intensive course.
