My Blog – Week 8

I got some inspiration from an elective course, which called Narratives of Digital Capitalism. During its intensive day, our group designed a physical device to mimic how social media works. In the conclusion, we found that social media algorithms are the mechanisms by which immersive, “unique” media feeds are created, which then opens the doors for influence. They create a user data feedback loop. Every status update, search, location you logged in from, even things you started typing then changed your mind about later, platforms like Facebook hold on to and analyse, trying to match you with your offline data. In addition, they reproduce the user in their own media environment. Within a few hours of using an app like Twitter, Netflix, Facebook, etc, the feed is customised to the user, based on the choices of what was read, ignored, or reacted to, & combined with collected data in physical spaces. In general, established persona and tailored messaging could have Influence on users’ decisions & beliefs.

Since the direction of my thesis is to study gender violence on social media, and algorithms are the most important and prominent feature on social media, I decided to include a section on algorithms and the impact on gender violence in my thesis.
