Week 1: Ready, Set, Go!
Hi everyone!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading through all your submissions for this week. I found myself contemplating a lot about my interest and passions during welcome week and week 1. One thing I have found is that I am overwhelmed and confused about where to go with my research topic after being away from school for a little while and doing a job that requires me to be diverse in my interests. So many of the readings I have been exposed to this week sparked excitement. I love deep diving into topics but often find myself torn on which rabbit hole to go down. I’m hoping as the weeks progress; this direction will become more and more clear for me.
I’ve thought about the soft skills I hope to bring to this program. A big one is adaptability. I believe that being open-minded and flexible in your thinking is something that will sprout new insights for me in my current ways of thinking. I’m nervous about tackling courses that are heavily based on coding and data. My background is in social science, and I find comfort in tasks like literature reviews. I want to push myself throughout the program to be coachable in other disciplines to bridge the gaps in knowledge that I have when it comes to data science.
This first week has gone by so quickly. I have yet to get the hang of the 8-hour time difference because I am used to being ahead of my work’s time zone. As I wrap up this post, it is setting in that we are all starting a very remarkable journey together that transcends time zones and I am very excited to see how each of our projects evolves over time!
Hi Meghan! Thanks for sharing your reflections with us. I love that you’ve prioritised on the skills you’d like to develop! Adaptability is a big one in general and I think in today’s day and age, where the world is uncertain and time is fast moving, you certainly won’t regret it. I’d love to hear more about the different situations you find yourself in over the year where adaptability unlocks a door to growth for you and those around you
