I met with the supervisor of my dissertation and decided on the final general direction, which was about the connection between “Big data inequality” and “finding a job”

 

“Big data inequality” and “finding a job” are two very different issues, but they may be linked in some ways. Big data can play a role in the recruitment process when it comes to finding a job…

Research question: Big data can have both positive and negative effects on the job search. While data analysis can help companies make informed hiring decisions, if the data used to make those decisions is biased or the algorithms used to analyse the data are trained on biased data, then this can lead to discrimination in the hiring process. It is important to ensure that the data and algorithms used are free of bias to prevent discrimination.

 

Explore the inequalities that big data bias creates for job seekers, for example (tentatively)

  1. what are the potential long-term impacts of big data on job search and career progression? How can these impacts be mitigated?
  2. How do different demographic groups (e.g. race, gender and socio-economic status) experience inequalities associated with big data in the job search process?
  3. What role do employers and job search websites play in ensuring that big data is used fairly and without discrimination in the recruitment process?
  4. How can the impact of big data on job search be measured and evaluated, and what indicators can be used to assess the fairness and equality of the job search process?
