Week 7-9: Potential Project Parameters

I wrote up a project parameters to send to JB and would like to include it below.  This act helped me to solidify what I was doing and wrap my mind around what the sole purpose of my project was about.  Some of this was changed, added to, or taken away from in the final project report, but this was my first major and solidified step towards finalizing the essence of my project.  I sent this to feedback from JB on April 13th, 2023.

 Research Questions:
How does public perception affect policies made about educators in the United States of America?
How do these policies affect teacher retention?
Method of Production:
Short film with infographics of Unit 1 and Unit 2.
Unit and Method of Analysis:
    1. Twitter – Web Scraping
      1. Using words: “teachers”, “students”, “schools”
      2. Excluding: any tweets not about teacher perception and/or clearly not in America
      3. During: major events related to education in March 2020-March 2023
        1. Examples: beginning of COVID, return to school (August 2020), school shootings, drag ban trials, book ban trials
        2. Reason: each of these event types have had the public give very stigmatized opinions on Twitter. At the beginning of COVID, teachers were seen as saviors, but towards the return to school, they were called “lazy” and blamed for not wanting to work. All of these events have negative and positive opinions given by the public.
      4. Production: using Python

      1. Methods:
        1. Analysing teacher retention throughout different years of education (2000-2005, 2018-2023)
        2. Analysing teacher pay throughout the same years (2000-2005, 2018-2023)
        3. (If there is already done research) Analysing teacher respect throughout the same years (2000-2005, 2018-2023)
        4. Federal and one state (yet to be chosen, potentially a state with lowest education ranking or lowest teacher retention)
  • Production
        1. Graphs (
        2. Discussion of analysis
    1. Public Policy Analysis
  • Methods
      1. Analyse policies in one state and how it connects to that state’s teacher retention
      2. Interview with a policymaker in that state

          1. What policies has the state passed to increase teacher retention, if any?
          2. What are some recent educational policies passed in the state?
          3. Do you know the average teacher’s salary in your state?
          4. Do you believe teachers are respected in your state?
