Data and Design for a Post-COVID City

                                                                              – Critical & Comprehensive

This is a fascinating course that has helped improve our overall capabilities. We need to focus on existing urban development issues and connect various aspects to find viable solutions. In this process, we need to engage with different stakeholders and analyze the problems through their authentic perspectives. Our ability to retrieve resources/ literatures has also greatly improved because analyzing a problem cannot be limited to surface-level analysis; we should dig deeper into its root causes.

When developing solutions, it is essential to provide evidence to support why we believe they would be useful. I have learned a lot from comparing different solutions from different regions and critically analyzing them based on their features.

The entire process has enhanced my ability to critically and comprehensively analyze things. In particular, I have tried to analyze the case of Highly Sensitive People (HSP) from the perspectives of different stakeholders. Apart from HSP, the concept’s author, psychologists, and even website operators are all relevant to this invisible inequality. Perhaps I will try to delve deeper into this analysis in my project.

Representing data

                                           – Paying attention to narrative and emphasis.

Narrative is something I used to pay little attention to in the past. My background in statistics has made me focus more on the rigor of data and the accuracy of charts. I seldom thought from the perspective of the audience on how to tell a “story” with data, rather than just focusing on the data itself.

Therfore, I am thinking about how to effectively present all the text data I have collected about HSP. What story do I want to tell in my paper? Perhaps the charts should be connected in a narrative line. For example, the emergence of the concept of HSP, its representatives, the circulation of its books, and then the relevant audience. The obvious logical relationship is the timeline, and the implicit one may be the development of social culture’s acceptance of different personalities. In other words, how our society has become more inclusivie of people with different personalities.

I have to admit that in China, compared to some Western countries, introverted individuals may face more challenges in the workplace. The reasons behind this include cultural and national factors, as well as social development reasons. I began to think that can I compare the historical development of acceptance towards introverted individuals in other countries as a narrative line, and compare where China currently stands in terms of this development and its characteristics?
