Week 7 and 8 Review

This is the third post in SEM2

Back from the reading week, which I had the initial project meeting with the clients on Tuesday about the ‘Hierarchical Word Cloud’ from ‘Representing Data’. This project is one of the most interesting projects for me in this course as it combines both fields of Natural Language Processing and Data Visualization. And it is indeed a bit challenging on the implementation part. We have found one useful article about this project but we don’t have the access to the source code for the article. So for now we are still drafting other possible visualization. And the rest of the week is still organizing the final artefact for ‘Inclusive Society’ on the ‘Data Activism’ topic.

Week 7:

  • Finalizing the artefact of ‘Data Activism’, the artefact mainly discusses the impact of data activism on the inclusive society, and my interest is about how the algorithm on the technology side can influence this social movement.
  • Back from the reading week, attend the ‘Representing Data’ session on Wednesday, and got introduced to the python package Altair, which I have not used before. The visualization from this package is so cool, and I am thrilled to use this in my project. And the class presented their projects and all seems very interesting.

Week 8:

  • Intensive days for ‘Data Science for Society’. The main activity of these two days is to explore on the given dataset by groups and give a presentation about the findings in the dataset at the end of the intensive. During the presentations from each group, I have seen people using varieties of methods to visualize the result as well as different ways to think about the data. This absolutely broadens my view about data processing.
  • Intensive days for ‘Artificial Intelligence and Storytelling’. It is a very interesting course. We have been assigned the coursework back from week 2, and the coursework is actually asking us to construct the story as well as the illustration with the AI tool, including the GPT, and stable diffusion. During the intensives, we have been introduced to the concept of neural networks and have implemented them on our own with some basic scripts, which is fun. We also created a story and images based on the given AI tools together by aggregating ideas from all the groups in the class. I found this course very interesting and catching up with the most advanced technology, but I feel like the implementation of neural networks is a bit separated from the course, since there were barely used in other content in the course. And the rest of the week is just to continue building my story with the AI tool and getting inspiration from other sources.

Update on the Project:

Haven’t received an update from the partner company, understandable that sometimes they would need to travel around or be busy with work, so it would take a bit of time to get a response. So I would put the priority on the current course first and wait for the update.

That is the review for the reading week, week 7 and week 8. I am happy with the current schedule of KIPP blogging and will continue doing this next week or the following week.
