In the Inclusive Society course assignment, I found citizens’ participation in political events on social media to study the democracy brought about by this phenomenon as an expression of the promotion of the development of an inclusive society. On the one hand, this political participation in social media breaks with the traditional top-down political practice and facilitates the formation of bottom-up political oversight. Based on some patterns of political engagement on social media, social media’s ability to upend established political institutions and practices has likely had the greatest noticeable effect on democratic politics and even has a larger potential to influence social power relations as they are utilized more often and integrated into secular practices of daily experience. Also, More and more people can participate in the decision-making of government affairs, and gradually have the right to speak and make decisions, instead of being marginalized. Based on the integration and divergence of multiple interests, social media provides more power, resources, and voice to marginalized groups, especially increasing the scope of political involvement research beyond a small group of politically engaged and aware citizens, which includes politically disenfranchised social groups and a social group that is frequently minimized in traditional American medical culture.
In addition to this topic, I specifically focused on social media and was struck by the fact that ICT plays an important role. I was pleasantly surprised by this discovery and hope to continue exploring how social media can maximize its contribution to society in other areas.
