Week 2 Looking and Searching
Long time no see!
This week I just finished my first intensive course Inclusive Society, and the course was tailored to be very full and of high quality. I learned a lot.
During the pre-intensive days, I read a lot of articles about data activism. I am really interested in data fairness or algorithmic fairness, which let me realize the importance of user information protection during the process of app product design. And I think of my past experiencece of an internship, I work as a product designer to design some statistical functions of an app. Perhaps product managers should take into account issues such as data inequality when communicating with algorithm engineers. But I think this is probably an overlooked part, both by product managers and users. Is there anything I can do about it, I started thinking about it but don’t have much of a clue yet.
This week we have a discussion about Crisis Text Line’s data leakage, which let me think of my experience in the past. It seemed that Taobao( an online shopping platform in China) the seller leaked my purchase history and personal information about my cosmetic purchase, which led to the scammer calling me. He posed as an employee of the cosmetipretending and bank employer, pretenting to ask my feedback but actually Learning about my financial information and try to get me to transfer money through a series of means. Luckily, I sensed something wrong early. But it was a very annoying experience. That article let me reflect the severity of personal data leakage in China, and can I do something about my final project to research this phenomenon? I hope to find more information about this topic in the following weeks.
Maybe I am not very satisfied with my current project research topic and I am used to be a little indecisive, so I pay attention to other potential topics recently. Hopefully, I can find a more interesting and satisfying topic~
Thanks for reading. Hope we can have a nice week!
