2 going on 3 :)

Wow isn’t it mad how this is already the end of week 2? – I do have to admit that this semester there was no faffing about – just getting STRAIGHT INTO IT and thus we are in week 2 going on 3!

I think a little reflection of our module “Inclusive Societies” & the insights I gained from it for KIPP might be quite nice for a little blog post today. I throughly enjoyed “Inclusive Societies”. We certainly covered a lot of ground and looked at, dissected and discussed some BIG ideas. Universal Basic Income, Localising economies etc. And my brain certainly still needs to process everything that happened this week. After Tuesday’s lecture (and work) I only slept 2 hours to then wake up fully convinced I’m late for an interview (hahahah). So maybe I also need to give my brain a little bit of time to let the ideas and input settle, but I would love to revisit the concepts in the next week or 2. Anyone want to join me on that? However, one think that I really enjoyed was the keynote speakers, seeing how the academic literature can translate into real-life action. That was super exciting and also (sorry I think I’m writing this like a total scatterbrain today) – I loved listening to the presentations from other groups and asking some pals what their favourite articles were. So my post-intensive reading list is filled to the brim 🙂 Also while talking about post-intensive and probably the most relevant point for KIPP – I am super excited to brain storm for the artefact assignment. I love the idea of being able to think outside the box, thinking outside “essay submissions” and tackle my topic citizen participation from a fresh and different angle. I’m not sure what I want to do yet, how abstract I can go, but I like the process of finding a creative solution to this very broad topic. And I think I should definitely see this as an indication that doing a more creative masters project might just be what I’m most passionate about at the moment.

Especially, if I want to do a PhD after this I will still be researching and writing academically for the next 3-4 years and thus I’m starting to think that maybe (while I also reeeeeeeeaally love the Bitcoin topic) I am leaning more towards the science communication/photography project. Or maybe I could address the Bitcoin topic per se, but in a creative way?  Plus, I will still need some accompanying research, meaning I still get to revisit research philosophies and methods (refreshen my knowledge). But also maybe a creative project is a way to stand out in applications. I can talk about my more “standard” undergraduate dissertation and use my EFI masters project to show creativity and a different side of me?

As mentioned above, my brain is absolutely scrambled right now, but I love to see how the intensives show again and again how we can draw parallels between different modules, classes and interests. And how EFI does take a very different, new approach. Maybe I should keep going with that theme & do something a little different to a traditional masters dissertation. Actually starting to think about it this way I want to START. Have the time to proper sit down, do some research, brainstorm, get some ideas on a piece of paper (or really virtual iPad paper) and sketch, fail, try again. Do you feel like that or are you still more in the process of finding an idea for the project? Do you think our ideas will still change quite a lot with the new modules and classes we’ll be taking in Semester 2?

Right – before my writing get’s all too confusing I’m going to leave it at that. But I have to say that “inclusive society” certainly gave me super interesting, new input and also showed me (indirectly) how excited I would be to do something different, creative, artsy. So maybe I should do some sketching and talk about the results another week. I’ll ponder a little bit on this, maybe also see how my creative approach to the assignment for inclusive societies actually goes (how I feel doing it) and then revisit the idea 🙂

& with that I wish you all a loooooovely weekend!
