One week to go…
We are very much looking forward to welcoming colleagues to Edinburgh for the one-day symposium on Classical Literature in the Renaissance on Tuesday 9 June. The day’s events will begin at 10:00 am in the Meadows Lecture Theatre in the Old Medical School (Doorway 4), Teviot Place, Edinburgh. The first session will feature a talk on “Writing Like and As: Versions of Classical Presence from Petrarch to Vegio” by Prof. Leah Whittington (Harvard); following a coffee break in the McMillan Room (1.31), our second panel will begin at 11:20 am, and includes talks by Dr Stuart Gillespie (Glasgow) and Prof. Sarah Knight (Leicester) on Renaissance English translations of ancient Greek and Latin texts and their impact on Renaissance writing in English. Lunch will be available for registered participants between 1:00 and 2:00 pm in the McMillan Room.
At 2:00 pm Prof. Marianne Pade (Aarhus) will speak on “Imitatio and Intertextuality in Humanist Translation”; there will then be an opportunity to visit a specially arranged display of manuscripts and early printed editions of classical texts at the Centre for Heritage Collections in Edinburgh University Library on the south side of George Square (maximum 30 people). Tea and coffee will be available in the McMillan Room from 4:00 pm to 4:20 pm. The formal part of the proceedings will resume at 4:20 pm in the Meadows Lecture Theatre with a round-table discussion featuring the speakers along with Prof. Emma Buckley (St Andrews), Dr Syrithe Pugh (Aberdeen), Prof. Jill Burke, Dr Richard Oosterhoff, and Dr Luke Houghton (Edinburgh), which will consider resources currently available for the study of the afterlife of classical literature in the Renaissance and possible future directions in this field, among other topics. After the close of proceedings at 5:00 pm, there will be an informal drinks reception in the McMillan Room.
If you have not yet sent an expression of interest to Luke Houghton, lhought2@ed.ac.uk, please do get in touch as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you there!
