Young People as Co-Researchers: AI Futures for Learning

As part of a project funded by the Kerr Fry Endowment, pupils from George Watson’s College, Castlebrae Community High School and Dunblane High School were co-researchers on the research project ‘Generative AI in Learning: Empowering Youth to Shape National Education Policy’.

The pupils conducted semi-structured focus groups with 50 peers and collaboratively analysed their findings with adult researchers. The results showed that young people are cautiously optimistic about GenAI’s potential for learning and do not support an outright ban in schools.

The young people presented their findings at an online seminar on 10th June 2025, attended by 66 teachers, researchers and policy makers from as far afield as South America, Canada and Croatia. At the event we also heard from colleagues from the SQA who discussed how the findings relate to the SQA’s stance on AI in assessment.

The outcomes of this research have been published as a research paper (https://osf.io/c784m) and were also presented at the UKICER Conference 2025.
