What outputs do we have?
We had two broad intentions guiding our project:
The first intention was that we wished to understand students’ experiences of racialisation and social oppression in their everyday university lives. We wanted to hear directly from them and capture their verbatim experiences, offer them a space to talk about their challenges and hear from others, and thereby reflect on their experiences to move towards change and action, whether in their personal process or in how they engaged with others and challenged the systems they live in.
This ties in with the second intention of the project. Drawing from Paulo Freire, author of The Pedagogy of the Oppressed, we wanted to pilot his methodology of ‘culture circles’ at the university and study the impact that it has on students, initially in terms of learning, change, and action as named above, but also perhaps in other ways we had not anticipated.
We have thus arrived at the following outputs which contain threads of both the above intentions in varying degrees:
- Student pamphlet: with students’ verbatim reflections on their experiences with race, identity and belonging emphasising on students’ understanding of and engagement with their socially situated identity.
- Generative Themes: that showcase the movement of dialogue and the deeper themes that were unpacked through collective reflection.
- Guide to culture circles: outlining the principles of the dialogical approach, providing adapted instructions for the individual sessions we held, and elucidating the impact that this approach had on students during the project.
- Recommendations: with student perspectives on what would facilitate meaningful engagement with race and culture.
- Photo Voice Gallery: comprised of photos shared with us by participants in response to two prompts we offered them.
- Knowledge Exchange Event: held on 10th October 2025, where we presented some of the above outputs to the wider University community.
