Hello! I’m Maryam, a first year Cognitive Science student, and I’m currently one of the Learn Foundations (LF) interns. When I first started the internship, I wasn’t really sure what we would be doing if I’m being honest. All that I knew was that we would be doing something related to Learn. In this blog I will explain what it means be an LF intern and what I have enjoyed the most about working at ISG.

What Do You Do as a Learn Foundations Intern?

The LF internship is kind of divided into two parts. The first part is comprised of course checks and accessibility checks. For course checks, all we had to do was ensure that the variables placed in the newly created Learn courses were correct. Once you get into the flow of things, this task gets easier and quicker. Accessibility checks are a little harder and can be vague. They require you to look at last year’s Learn courses and report on the accessibility of documents, videos, images, and links. Accessibility checks need quite a bit of communication with your team and ensuring everyone’s on the same page. The data you provide from these accessibility checks will be used in a report that is sent out to all the schools, who are responsible for populating next year’s courses with content.

The second part is more flexible and the tasks future LF Interns get will most likely be different to mine. For example, we migrated past courses from Moodle to Learn. For this part of the internship, my best advice for upcoming LF interns is to take advantage of the time you are given. You will be given some tasks but will also have time to work on a personal project. You can also take this time to complete online courses and work on the Edinburgh Award.

What I Enjoyed the Most

There have been many things that made this internship truly enjoyable. The very first thing that comes to mind is the working environment. Everyone I met has been very kind and accommodating. The managers are warm and welcoming, providing their support wherever they can. The interns created a fun community, where we would meet up every day at lunch and chat. Some days we would even play board games or work on puzzles. Meeting people from different backgrounds and at different stages of life has been both exciting and informative. I especially enjoyed it when people would share their hobbies and interests with each other. I played Dungeons and Dragons and bouldered for the very first time because of the enthusiasm that the interns showed for their hobbies. Additionally, the academic advice I received from the other interns has helped me understand what to expect from my future years at the university.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I am honestly very glad and grateful that I had the opportunity to work at ISG with so many talented people. The work that I do is fulfilling and has taught me a lot about learning technology and accessibility. I hope to continue to improve on my work and to complete my personal project!
