Contribute to the Equal Bite Book (Athena Swan Project)

Are you interested in contributing to Equal Bite, a crowd-sourced ‘recipe’ book focusing on gender equality in higher education? The aim of the project is to draw on the experiences and insights of our staff and students and share practical actions we can take (individually and as an institution) which could enhance working environments for everyone in the University of Edinburgh. The audience for the published book is university communities worldwide and we hope to share stories to inform, entertain & inspire to achieve gender equality.

So far, people have written recipes on: recruitment, career progression and promotion; unconscious bias; working environment, role models and culture; flexible working and work life balance. We’re particularly keen to explore ‘reality gaps’ where there may be an appropriate policy but it isn’t always straightforward to implement.

Want to contribute?

You can attend one of the short recipe writing workshops:

Or, you can send a draft recipe (the recipe template and example recipes are available on the Equal Bite Website) to equal.bite@ed.ac.uk

The project is part of the University’s Athena Swan Silver Award action plan. The Equal Bite book will be published in January 2017 and will include recipes, in-depth case studies and academic papers. More information on the project can be found here:

We’re keen to involve as many people as possible. Please encourage colleagues and students to get involved too!
