Holiday Movies and Traditions Advent Calendar: Day 23

Today’s Film: A Christmas Carol

Are we cheating a little by mentioning A Christmas Carol after already showcasing Scrooge on a previous day? Well, maybe a little. But there have been so many iterations of this story that it is virtually impossible to only mention one. So, today we are going to look at a few. The 1984 television movie staring George C Scott is many people’s favourite but others prefer Alistair Sims (1951), or Patrick Stewart (1999), or even motion capture Jim Carey (2009). All of these renditions however, do a wonderful job adapting Dickens’ classic to the screen, whether big or small. Several people I know enjoy finding new adaptations to watch each year and comparing what bits are left out and what is remembered, and they especially love comparing how the ghosts are depicted. Some renditions are much darker than others (see 2019’s Guy Pierce) but they all remember to include the important themes and messages that make the story a classic. Have I not mentioned your favourite version? Maybe a version that is beloved by many with a cast made up of childhood icons? Well, let’s see what’s behind the door on Christmas Eve!

Today’s Tradition: Takanakuy; Chumbivilcas, Peru.

The Takanakuy festival is a unique and ancient tradition celebrated in the Chumbivilcas province of Peru on December 25. This festival is a blend of cultural expression, music, and community bonding, where participants engage in ritualized hand-to-hand combat to resolve disputes and strengthen bonds. The festival is a colourful spectacle, featuring traditional costumes, vibrant music, and dance, and is a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Andean communities.
