Today’s Film: Joyeux Noel
This is a more sombre entry into our calendar as Joyeux Noel’s focus is the Christmas truce of 1914 during WW1, shown through the eyes of French, Scottish, and German soldiers. It is a fictionalised account of an actual event that took place in December 1914 when troops on both sides of the trenches agreed to a truce and entered into no man’s land to meet, exchange presents, and play a game of football. The film then explores the time after the truce and how it impacted all involved. It is a poignant film about an incredible moment in history where the power of Christmas triumphed over war for one brief moment. It may not be as cheerful as other holiday films but it’s message is as important now as it was in 1914.
Today’s Tradition: Christbaumloben, Germany
The tradition of Christbaumloben in Germany is a great way to celebrate the beauty of Christmas trees. It involves visiting neighbours and praising their trees, which encourages social gatherings and festive cheer. This custom, which has nearly disappeared, was particularly common in Bavaria and Swabia. Visitors would complement the beauty of each Christmas tree and, in return, receive a small drink or treat as thanks. This tradition not only adds a touch of warmth and personal connection to the holiday season but also fosters a sense of community and shared joy during the festive period.
