December has finally arrived and we are excited to be getting into the holiday spirit. Each day of the month we will be highlighting one of our favourite seasonal movies and an interesting tradition from around the world. If you have a favourite movie or tradition, let us know and we may highlight it later in the month.

Day one Miracle on 34th Street
For the first day of Advent, I am highlighting my favourite holiday movie: Miracle on 34th Street. Specifically the 1994 version. I have seen and loved the original 1947 version but I grew up with Richard Attenborough and Mara Wilson. Everything about this film says “Christmas” to me and Attenborough is who I see when I think of Father Christmas.
It is full of warmth, goodwill, and holiday spirit which makes it a must-watch every year for me.
Today’s tradition: Namahage Demons, Akita Prefecture Japan

The Namahage demons visit houses of the Oga peninsula in Akita Prefecture Japan on New Year’s Day. They ask if there are any badly behaved children or lazy people in the house. The adults in the houses know who is dressed as the demons and may ask them to visit and teach specific lessons to their children.
