What are the Ides of March?
You may have heard talks of the upcoming Ides of March in the HCA building or by professors, but when exactly is this date and why is it so important?
The Ides of March is just the ancient way of saying the 15th of March. This date was immortalised by the assassination of the famous Roman politician Julius Caesar in 44 BC.
Caesar was stabbed to death on the floor of a senate as a result of a conspiracy against him headed by Brutus and Cassius. Caesar’s death led to major political instability and civil war, one of the many reasons for its significance. This instability ended when Octavian assumed power by defeating his enemies and establishing the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
Caesar’s murder is the subject of many famous works throughout history, from the contemporary accounts of Cicero and Brutus, to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and even more recent productions like HBO’s Rome.
