Discussion and news from the Enterprise Architecture (EA) service

New Enterprise Architecture website

We have a new website!  In this website, we aim to explain to members of University staff what we do and how we can help people with their projects and services.  In addition, the website has subsections about University data, Application integration, and relationship management (CRM), as well as information about how to join our EA community.  Please take a look and feedback any comments.

Enterprise Architecture website

To design this website, we started by collecting user stories from among our existing community.  We then grouped these and used the groups to structure a hierarchy of web pages.  I used a mind mapping tool to draw this hierarchy, assigning the user stories to leaves of the hierarchy.  This tool allowed us to review and modify the design quickly as we developed our ideas.

I then used colour coding to track the progress of writing all the pages:

  • Red – not started
  • Yellow – draft ready for review
  • Green – ready to publish
  • Blue – finished

This use of the mind-mapping tool made it easy for us to see the overall status and how well our writing was going.  Overall, I found the tool really helpful to manage this work.

Producting all this text took us rather longer than I’d hoped, which is mainly because we had to fit in writing time around our day-to-day activities.  We had valuable support from the University’s website team, who helped review the overall design, advised us on good writing style, and provided help with finding many of the pictures,

This is a first release of the website.  We know there are some user stories which people have requested and that we haven’t finished writing.  We also expect that people will have new user stories, or will request changes to the existing pages to make them better and more relevant.  We see this as an ongoing activity, responding to people’s requests and feedback.
