Eager to attend the opportunity of a summer school at Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in China was too enticing to pass up. This program offered a unique chance to delve into intelligent engineering while connecting with students from various parts of the world in an exciting cultural setting.
Dynamic schedule
The four-week program at HEU involved lectures, workshops and cultural excursions. Designing a smart car was a particular highlight which required the team to collaborate effectively and think creatively to programme the smart car to manoeuvre around an obstacle course.
Other events, in which the team succeeded in, included: Phoenix Contact Smart Manufacturing Innovation and Cube Satellite Design. Enabling valuable insight into the latest technologies and to experience engineering innovations.
Eye-opening insights
Touring Harbin’s Planning Exhibition Hall, I witnessed renewable building projects that reinforced the real-world impact of intelligent engineering on sustainability and community stewardship. Witnessing these practical examples was truly inspiring.
One of the most impactful sessions was a lecture on the integration of wireless communication for use in satellites. The lecture detailed HEU’s CubeSat systems and assembly, providing a practical perspective on the theoretical knowledge we had acquired.
Building connections
Some of my most enjoyable moments were spent with fellow international students from diverse academic backgrounds. We explored local Chinese cuisine, reflected on the day’s lessons and Chinese culture sessions such as Tai Chi, Calligraphy and the Cucurbit Flute.
Lessons learned
The memories from HEU of highlights such as interacting with peers in an enriched cultural setting can lead to unexpected and rewarding outcomes, such as the smart car project.
Participating in the summer school at Harbin Engineering University was a transformative experience. It provided a unique platform to explore intelligent engineering within a culturally immersive environment. I am excited to apply the knowledge and skills gained from this program in my future endeavours and encourage other students to seek similar opportunities to expand their horizons.
