People are here

The image featured on this website is by the Ukrainian artist Bohdana Chilikina. The map of Ukraine is colored crimson-red — the country is covered in blood. In the middle the white inscription in Cyrillic reads “People are here” (Tut lyudy) — one of the few cases when the text is easily read and understood both in the Russian and Ukrainian languages. This is the signpost the Ukrainians have placed on fences, gates, and doors (as evidenced by numerous photographs) since the first days of the occupation, trying to prevent the rushists’ shelling, appealing in vain to their humanity. At the top right, a soiled and bloody book page — a sheet from Mikhail Sholokhov’s novel, And Quiet Flows the Don (Tikhiy Don).
