Physics Education: A Female Gaze

Physics Education: A Female Gaze

Women's underrepresentation in physics and what education has to do with it

Recap

Our input, analysis and interpretation so far

In Analysis and Voices, we have gathered valuable input from many different perspectives to understand the situation in detail.

It started with gathering a whole mountain of information on minorities, especially women, in physics. We organized all this data into five different categories and analyzed what seems to be happening in physics education:

Statistics on representation

show a generally positive trend for physics degrees earned by women, but the number has essentially stagnated around 20-25% for the past decades;

compared to other STEM subjects like chemistry or biology, physics is falling far behind;

the number of women in physics is also consistently low across various ethnicities;

Female Learners

tend to have lower self-efficacy, less beneficial motivational mindsets and all in all greater difficulties in developing a physics identity than male learners

  Teachers

play a critical, often challenging role in creating inclusive learning contexts; subtleties in their instruction, behavior and recognition of students can have strong impacts, for better or worse

  Curricula

in their contents and contexts as well as assessments are often biased toward males

  Cultural Narratives and Stereotypes

position science as a masculine domain and physics as requiring innate brilliance, a trait which is generally associated with white men

These factors all interact in complex ways, so we analyzed on deeper levels what’s really going on and tied it all together. Through the podcast episodes, we also illustrated the interplay of many of these factors on an individual level.

All clear so far? Then let’s continue and think about futures!
