Welcome

The University of Edinburgh branch of Academics for Academic Freedom has been created to advocate for academic freedom at our university.

We invite interested members of the academic community – staff and students – to join us. You’re welcome irrespective of your disciplinary background, role in the University, or political views.. We ask only that you are committed to defending and advocating for academic freedom as defined in the Academics for Academic Freedom statement of principles:

‘We, the undersigned, believe the following two principles to be the foundation of academic freedom:
(1) that academics, both inside and outside the classroom, have unrestricted liberty to question and test received wisdom and to put forward controversial and unpopular opinions, whether or not these are deemed offensive, and
(2) that academic institutions have no right to curb the exercise of this freedom by members of their staff, or to use it as grounds for disciplinary action or dismissal.’

To join us, email Edinburgh.afaf@ed.ac.uk

So of all of the issues related to Academic Freedom in the UK, this is what you want to hang your hat on? Wow. This movie is anti trans. Unless you are trans or a medical doctor in this space, how does the opinion promoted in this movie show up as anything but anti trans? Trans men and women have been around forever, and yet when they ask for normal human rights, all of a sudden they are threat to be eradicated. You have the freedom to express your views, but you are not free from the consequences of your colleagues and the academic community seeing you for who you are.

    1. jhearn says:

Your claims here are hyperbolic. No-one wants to ‘eradicate’ trans people. We simply advocate open discussion when rights-claims come into conflict.
