Edinburgh Seven

Edinburgh Seven

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of seven Edinburgh women who helped change education forever.

Representing the Seven: Sorna Paramananthan

On 6 July,  seven current medical students from the University of Edinburgh will be accepting a posthumous MBChB degree on behalf of the Edinburgh Seven.  We spoke to each of them about the significance of the event and their ambitions for the future.

Sorna Paramananthan, Year 3.  Originally from Edinburgh.

What inspires you about the Edinburgh Seven?

They fought for what they knew they deserved, allowing me to live in a place where my right to education isn’t even questionable.

I think a lot of other institutions might have glossed over something like this in their history, which is why I’m happy that the University of Edinburgh have at least acknowledged an unjust past, in the hopes of raising awareness for a better future.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I’m still deciding what I want to do in my career, but I know that even if I’m half as hardworking and determined as any of these women, I would be proud.
