Gülay Cagla Firatli

Hello, my name is Gülay and I am an early-career researcher in law of the sea and marine environmental law. I have a background in International Relations (BA) and International Law (LLM). I have recently completed my doctoral thesis and passed my Viva at the University of Edinburgh Law School. My PhD thesis concerns governance of disputed maritime areas.

I am excited to be part of this great initiative alongside two my colleagues Christine and Pedro. We are excited to use this platform to discuss ideas, share perspectives, discuss developments in law and policy relating to the environment, climate and oceans – areas of research that we are all passionate about!

Christine Gaebel

I am an interdisciplinary PhD candidate with the Edinburgh Earth, Ecology and Environment Doctoral Training Partnership (E4 DTP) at the University of Edinburgh. My research investigates science-policy interfaces and the use of scientific knowledge in international marine biodiversity governance processes, including the new international agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). In addition to my research, I Co-Lead the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative’s BBNJ Working Group, which works to facilitate meaningful links between deep-sea scientific knowledge, knowledge producers, and decision-makers and decision-making processes.
