Nutrition in the ICU – Open Access Resource (OER)

Description of the OER

This OER is an infographic that summarises the main recommendations of the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN) guideline on clinical nutrition in the intensive care unit. (Singer 2019).   It has been created by Dr David Griffith as part of an assessment for the Digital Education elective course he has taken as part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) at the University of Edinburgh.

Purpose

The MSc in Critical Care is a postgraduate online MSc programme aimed at clinicians that treat critically ill adults as part of their clinical jobs.

The ESPEN guidelines contain evidence and expert-based recommendations to guide nutritional therapy in patients being treated in intensive care.  The source document runs to 32 pages containing 57 individual recommendations covering all aspects of nutritional care.  The OER simplifies the presentation of this excellent resource and to make it accessible to provide a helpful summary of recommendations.

Learning outcome alignment

The OER aligns with the following learning outcomes from the following courses on the MSc in Critical Care:

Core Clinical Practice in Critical Care (CRCA11003)

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories, concepts and principles of the basic clinical sciences underpinning the day-to-day management of patients in intensive care
  • Demonstrate the application of that knowledge to safe treatment decisions for patients being treated in a critical care environment
  • Be able to identify threats to patient safety and use critical judgement to apply systems which promote patient safety and strive towards continual improvement in standards of care.
