Informal minutes from 23 Jan. session

No one took minutes for this session, as most of the time was taken up with the ‘paragogy’ workshop run by Neil Mulholland. We did the ‘make gold’ speculative workshop described in ‘speculations’ on this page: http://www.shift-work.org.uk/

I’m writing a few notes for the record, and for our planning for next week.

Apologies received for the session: Gaby, Chawon, Niamh, Cara, Caroline

A few people stayed for the discussion after the workshop on meeting with Dorothy Miell and others next week, and we raised the points below:

1. We talked about what kind of questions they might ask about our system of keeping track of attendance. We agreed we’d just talk about our process of coming to that decision, and why we did, as well as what effects it had.

2. We talked about points we’d like to raise with them ourselves, e.g. beyond their particular interests. The things we thought of were: having more pass/fail, small-scale, experimental courses is a good thing (and some people are taking others this year, e.g. Intro to Queer Studies, Creative Arts and Social Work, and Nature, Greenspace and Health); concerns about casualization and tutors’ conditions of work; importance of more opportunities for connections between staff and students.

3. Since not many people could stay after 4pm, we agreed that it would be good if some people could meet at 1pm in the ECA Cafe on 30 Jan. to finalize plans for the session.

At the end, we also talked about how to run the reading session next week (on the introduction and Ch.1 of ‘The Ignorant Schoolmaster’ by Jacques Ranciere). Dante said the googledocs link he shared to the book includes some questions and further readings. We mooted the idea of discussing some of these questions and the reading in smaller groups. Dante said he would come up with some prompt questions for the session.

Please add anything I missed!
